Winter Sequencing

This week in Pre-K we continued with our winter theme. With a focus on sequencing. Sequencing was introduced through many activities. If you are wondering why this is important? Here you go.........

Why is sequencing important for kids?

Sequencing leads to success with so many daily activities! When children are able to use sequencing skills successfully, they can do the following:

  • Recognize patterns

  • Make predictions

  • Put a series of objects or events in a logical order

  • Understand transition words like first, next, and last

  • Know the elements of a story like beginning, middle, and end

  • Comprehend stories

  • Retell stories and past events

  • Put words and sounds together in the correct order to communicate

  • Follow daily routines at home and school

  • Approach an unfamiliar task in a logical manner

  • Know when a task is completed

Winter gear sequencing

I wish I had pictures of this. When we would come in with hats, mittens scarfs, snow pants, jackets and boots. There was a mixed up pile about 2 feet high. Good luck sorting through that cold wet pile. I knew something had to be done. That's when sequencing popped in my head. Now we have three areas to drop the gear at. Here's our sequence. 1. Come in from outside, stop at the accessory boxes (each child has their own labeled) drop of their hat and mittens, 2. remove boots and put them on boot mats. 3. Snow pants off and hung on the wall hooks followed by their coat. The kids have all learned this sequence of activities. And follow it through perfectly. I'm not telling you this Because I'm super proud of your kids. Even though I am. I'm sharing this because through these simple activities your children are developing so many skills.

Here are other activities that we had fun sequencing.

The Mitten

The mitten is a folktale of a boy who loses his mitten in the snow and an assortment of animals make their way in to stay warm. The children made their own mitten and following the sequence of the story added the animals.

There was a cold lady who swallowed some snow is a whimsical story about a woman who swallowed many items that eventually turned into a snowman. The children had fun listening to the story and placing the items in the numerical order in which they happened in the story.

Sequence by size.

This is a beautifully illustrated story (without words) about a girl and 3 gifts she receives in various sizes.

Big, bigger and biggest.

Let's build a snowman.

Sneezy the Snowman

Sneezy the snowman is the story of a snowman who is cold and finds different ways to warm up. Only to melt and then become a snowman again. The children loved this story! I am going to put the story on the Pre-K facebook page. Your children will love to read along.

Here is our own Sneezy the Snowman.

A special Sneezy the Snowman snack. Yum!!

Ice cream snowman, snowball marshmallows and pretzels.
