Weather

This week we began our Weather Unit. We began the week by discussing different types of weather. During morning meeting we came up with a great list of "weather words" that included: tornado, rainbow, rain, cold, hot, blizzard, foggy, humid, thunderstorm, snow, windy, and lightning. We also read many weather books including: Weather Words by Gail Gibbons, Clouds by Anne Rockwell, Fly Guy Presents: Weather by Tedd Arnold and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett.

Walking Rainbow Science Experiment

The Pre-K kiddos loved making their own walking rainbow from just three colors. It was a lot of fun to watch the rainbow form right before our eyes! This lesson teaches color theory, capillary action, the scientific method, and engineering.

Rain Cloud Science Experiment

Our shaving cream rain cloud science experiment was a lot of fun! This experiment teaches kids about how rain is formed. When water droplets evaporate and continue to collect in a cloud, they get heavier and heavier. They will eventually become too heavy to float on the air so the water droplets will fall to the ground as rain!

Windy STEAM

We explored the power of wind through a simple yet engaging STEAM activity! How do you observe something you can't see like the wind? We divided our wind investigation into two parts. The first part of the activity allowed the kiddos to experience and engage in hands-on play with wind. The second encouraged the kids to use their observations from the first activity to create a work of art!  To explore wind we used a fan and various items to see how they moved in the wind. We then created lovely "Windy Art Printmaking" using inspiration from our hands-on play. Using our fingers or q-tips the kiddos drew in paint creating designs they thought looked like the wind. Then the kiddos took a piece of card stock and then pressed it down into the paint. We then peeled the paper and checked out the cool design! Next, we glued on feathers to create a mixed media work of art!

Journals

This week for journals the question was - What is your favorite type of weather?

Water Sensory Play with Magnets

The kiddos had a blast exploring in the colorful and scientifically fun water sensory bin with magnets!

February Self-Portraits

Self-portraits help the children reflect about themselves in a concrete way - they are looking at their features, considering their size, shape and how they relate to each other. When we paint our self-portraits the first step is looking in the mirror. We observe our features; noticing shapes and colors. We then decide on the paint that is the best match for our skin color. After we paint the body and everything is dry we then add the details - hair, eyes, mouth, clothes, etc.

Art Class

This week in art class the kiddos were given various shapes and were encouraged to create. Some of the things the kids made include: a hermit crab, a person, Cat Boy, a ghost, and "something scary!"

Mystery Reader

This week our mystery reader was Blake's dad - Daddy Neal. Thank you for reading to us.

French

This week in French the kiddos practiced colors, counting and body parts.

Library with Ms. Hilda

Rainbow

This week (and next) the kids will take turns taking home Rainbow! Rainbow is a llama lovey who is excited to share adventures with the Pre-K kiddos and return to school the next day with a completed journal entry to share with the class.

Free Choice

This week the kiddos also participated in: painting with rollers and scrapers, fishing for phonics, painting with balloons, zoo phonics letters swat, sensory play, and much more!

Next week we will continue our Weather Unit.
