This week we continued our Polar Bears unit.
Journals
This week our journal entry was based on the book "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You See?" The kids were asked to insert themselves into the story and pretend that they saw something! For example: "Ajay, Ajay, What Do You See?" "I see a ____________ looking at me!"
Polar Bear Craft
This week the kiddos used their scissors skills and worked hard cutting while following a line. This is hard work for the kiddos and I encourage practicing using scissors at home too!
Painting Ice - A "Cool" Sensory Activity
We had so much fun exploring ice as we are learning all about the Arctic! The kids thought that painting on ice was so much fun and watching the colors pool as the ice melted was beautiful. I also turned this into a color mixing activity as each station had two primary colors. I asked the kids, "What happens when red and yellow are mixed together? Blue and red? Blue and yellow?"
Math Games
This week we played many math games that reinforced one-to-one correspondence, patterns, counting, number identification, subitizing, and size sorting from shortest to tallest.
If you’re wondering what subitizing is, it is the ability to instantly recognize “how many” in a small set. A perfect example of subitizing is dice; when you roll a dice and you see two dots on top, you instantly recognize it as representing a quantity of two. You don’t need to count each dot on the dice to figure it out. Math researchers have identified the ability to subitize as an important part of developing basic number sense skills. They’ve discovered that when young children can see numbers in patterns, they also have stronger number sense skills overall.
Dot Art
The kiddos loved exploring all things circle! The children had the opportunity to glue various circles and buttons onto black paper. They could also use cups to stamp into paint and then onto their paper.
Self-Portraits
This week the kiddos completed their January self-portraits. First the kids painted their body, using paint that closely matches their own skin color. Once the first round of painting dried the kiddos painted the rest of the details- hair, eyes, mouth, and clothes.
Reading Practice
The kiddos are continuing to work hard on letter sounds and blending CVC words.
STEM
Foam blocks and shaving cream towers are the perfect combination of sensory play and preschool STEM. The kiddos loved exploring with their senses while building!
STEM - Build a Polar Bear Den
The students LOVED completing this winter activity! The students were challenged to build a den for a polar bear using the materials provided - toothpicks and marshmallows.
Take a Look at a Book
Everyday after snack the kids practice independent reading by selecting a book and looking at the pages quietly.
Reading Buddies
We love our reading buddies! Thank you for reading to us!!
Library
During library class with Ms. Hilda the kiddos participate in a read-aloud and then get a chance to look at books and then check-out a book to take home for a week.
Art Class - 2D Cardboard Buildings
This activity introduced making forms out of shapes. The kiddos first looked at pictures of different buildings (including Roycemore!) Then the kids decided if they were going to make their building really tall or really long. Then the kids picked out various shapes to build their design. The kiddos used tacky glue to glue down their cardboard shapes. Next week the kids will paint their designs!
Next week we will begin our Dinosaur Unit!
