Gingerbread

The weeks between Thanksgiving and winter break are amazing! I love coming back from Thanksgiving break because it means that it’s time for some winter holiday fun. My favorite theme for the holidays is gingerbread. There are so many fun activities that promote learning but also invoke a festive spirit, no matter which holiday the students celebrate.

This week we read many different versions of The Gingerbread Man. We then spent some time comparing and contrasting the different stories.

Gingerbread Shape Craft

This week the kiddos practiced using their scissor skills to cut out a gingerbread shape. This was a difficult task for us and the kiddos needed a lot of teacher guidance. I would encourage practicing using scissors at home to help your child increase their hand strength and control. Always remind your kiddo to have proper form - thumbs up, elbow in. We then decorated our gingerbread's using a variety of shapes. We then practiced counting how many of each shape we glued down. During this activity we worked on fine motor skills, shape recognition and counting.

Dissolving Cookie Science

Simple science activities are great for encouraging thinking, problem solving, observing, and exploring. Science encourages a wonderful sense of curiosity. We began the experiment by making predictions. Will the cookie sink or float? Will the cookie get bigger or smaller? Will it stay the same size? Will it change color? We then dropped a cookie in a container of water and discussed the children’s observations. We checked on our cookie every 30 seconds and used our tongs to lift it out of the water. The first time we checked our cookie it was still crunchy. Every 30 seconds, it changed! The cookie then began to float and the water turned red from the sugar dissolving.

Gingerbread Roll & Stamp

The kiddos rolled the dice, counted the dots, and marked the corresponding number on their recording sheet with a dot marker.

Boggle Junior

This is a great word game for preschoolers! Boggle Junior reinforces the ABC's with different ways to play - differentiating learning. Option 1 is that players can match the letter cubes to the picture/word cards. Option 2 is that players can cover up the word and then try to sound out the word.

Calendar

Everyday during morning meeting we have calendar time and have a specific calendar helper. During calendar time I try to make it more like a casual conversation about our days together than a rote memorization routine. I casually say “Today is Tuesday” (or whatever day it is), but we don’t recite the days of the week. I also don’t say “Yesterday was ___. Tomorrow will be ___.” Preschoolers don’t understand those concepts. I primarily use our calendar time to talk about numbers and to practice counting. Sometimes I will remove numbers and ask the children to put them in the correct spot. This week we introduced counting by 2's.

Water Color Process Art

The children had fun exploring the oil pastels and watercolor paint in both the spray bottles and droppers.

Mystery Reader

This week out Mystery Reader was Mrs. Dinelli (EDP Teacher). Thank you for reading to us!
