Friendship

One of the best things about Pre-K is the friendships that form. At the beginning of the year the kiddos are strangers....and now they are friends! The friendships that have formed over the past few months are amazing. I've never seen a group of kids so happy to see each other everyday. In Pre-K you can really feel the love!

We started the week reading books about friendship and talked about how we can be a great friend. We made a list of "kind" and "unkind" actions. We also appointed a Friendship Fairy each day. The Friendship Fairy watches for a kind and caring friend.

Friendship Color Mixing

Red, yellow, and blue are great alone, but when you mix them you create something beautiful.  This is how lasting friendships are formed.  Two individuals coming together to create something beautiful - friendship! During this activity the children worked with a friend. The children took turns placing one hand in one of the primary colors, and making handprints on the table. The kiddos were encouraged to hold hands and mix the colors together. "What does the paint feel like on your hands?""What do red and purple make?""Can you create that color again?""How many different colors can you make?"

Marble Painting

Painting with marbles is a fun way to combine process art and science. It is also the perfect combination of creativity, experimentation, and exploration for kids.  First, we used squeeze bottles to add paint onto the paper and then added marbles to the box and rolled them around through the paint until a beautiful work of art was created.

Painting Snow

This week we brought some snow inside and painted the snow using water colors in spray bottles and in cups using droppers. Great fine motor practice and also a great sensory experience!

Journals

For journals this week the kiddos were asked: How can you be a good friend?

The Kindness Kid

This week we watched a Sesame Street video called "The Kindness Kid." In the video The Kindess Kid (Zachary Levi) visits Sesame Street to spread kindness and Grover wants to be a Kindness Kid too. At the end of the video we talked about how Pre-K kids can be Kindness Kids too!

Art Class

This week in art class with Ms. Stein the kiddos made animal prints.

Painting with Cars

The kiddos enjoyed this gross motor process art activity! The children were intrigued with the idea of painting with cars, experimenting with different ways to drive through the paint mixing colors and creating different designs and patterns.

Shaving Cream Marbled Hearts

Shaving cream art marbling is one of our favorite process art activities. The great thing about making these sweet marbled hearts is the children can pick whatever color combination they want and they have a fun sensory experience. The art process is very easy, and the result is always beautiful.

Reading Buddies

This week the Pre-K kids got to visit the Sixth Grade Humanities classroom. It was fun to read together in a different space.

Compliment Circle

At the close of our morning meeting each day this week the kids would take turns complimenting each other. I taught the kids to use phrases starting with "You are good at...." "I like the way you....." "I like your......" "It was nice of you to....."

Chinese Lunar New Year

At Roycemore, we are lucky enough to be part of an international community. On Tuesday, our Chinese Upper School students shared their culture and customs with us as we celebrated the Chinese Lunar New Year together.

Recess

It is wonderful that the kiddos get to go outside for recess! Not many schools take the plunge and play outside during the "colder months." A little fresh air does the body good! Please make sure your child comes to school with the proper winter gear: snow-pants, boots, gloves, hat and a warm jacket.

Music

This week the kiddos enjoyed music class with Ms. Dinelli (EDP Teacher). The kids played instruments and learned new songs.

Mystery Reader

This week our Mystery Reader was Ajay's mom! Thank you for coming in and reading to us.

Happy Birthday

This week Alex turned 4! Her dad read us a book and brought in yummy treats. Happy Birthday Alex.

Next week we will continue our Friendship Unit.
