Dinosaurs

A dinosaur theme is a sure fire way to capture little one’s interest and curiosity. Just talking about dinosaurs with kids is so much fun! Our week was filled with names to learn, questions to answer and hands on activities to try.

Stomp, Chomp, Big Roars!

Here come the DINOSAURS!

KWL Chart

To begin the week we thought about what we already know about dinosaurs. Then the kiddos stated things they wanted to learn about dinosaurs. The kiddos had a lot of questions and this was a great way to list them and revisit them. At the end of our dinosaur unit and during it, we listed the answers to some of our questions. We didn't find out all the answers, though and the kids learned that is ok!

Shape Dinosaurs

The kiddos were offered a variety of green card stock shapes and were encouraged to glue them together to create their own dinosaur.

Dino Dig

The kiddos LOVED playing with the kinetic sand and dinosaur fossils in the sensory table. Each morning during free choice the kids were drawn to the dino dig and loved pretending to be Paleontologists. The center was equipped with paleontologist tools such as hats, magnifiers, brushes, craft sticks and a guide book.

Dino Tracks

The kiddos loved making the dinosaurs stomp around the paper creating dinosaur tracks!

Duplo Stamped Dinos

This dinosaur art activity was so fun! We used Duplos for the stamping as we thought it looked like scales, and I think they’ve turned out quite well. We discussed what colors we thought dinosaurs would be, and came up with a mix of greens, browns, and yellows. We encouraged the kids to mix the colors and experiment with different ways to stamp. The fun thing about process art is that it’s appropriate for all ages and there’s no right or wrong way to stamp their dinosaur art, and each child will end up with a different design. I love how the colors mix together, too.

Journals

This week for journals the kiddos were asked to imagine themselves as a dinosaur - What do you look like? What do you like to eat? What do you like to do?

Dino Matching Game

Matching and memory card games improve concentration, train visual memory, increase attention to detail, and improve the ability to find similarities and differences in objects.

Library

Every Friday the kiddos get to go to the library to listen to a story and check-out a book!

Art Class

This week in art class the kids painted the base coat for their houses. Next week the kids will add details using a variety of colors.

Zoo Phonics

The kiddos are mastering letter sounds. We are also working on initial and final letter sounds. For example - What is the first sound in 'dog'? What is the final sound in 'cat'?

Mystery Reader

This week our mystery reader was second grade teacher Ms. Taylor-Pines. Thank you for reading to us!
